Goodguys Southeastern Nationals

Friday, October 30 - Sunday, November 1, 2009 | 8:00am

More than 3,000 custom and modified cars will be at Lowe's Motor Speedway for the 16th annual Goodguys Southeastern Nationals Oct. 30 - Nov. 1. Born more than 50 years ago, the street rod and custom craze is thriving and this giant event showcases automotive masterpieces from around the nation.

Street rods, customs, street machines and muscle cars displayed at the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals span the spectrum of automotive history, ranging from Model-A Fords stuffed with V-8 power to the radical Dodges and Chevrolets that ruled the streets during the late 1960s.

The action-packed event also includes a manufacturers' midway, swap meet, car corral area with vehicles for sale, model car and pedal car display and a chance to ride around the famous 1.5-mile Lowe's Motor Speedway at 130-plus miles per hour in the passenger seat of a NASCAR Sprint Cup race car.

A highlight of the weekend comes Saturday night when more than 2,000 of the brightly colored machines take to the 1.5-mile superspeedway for the annual Cruise Under the Lights.

Attention, all fans and participants planning to travel through Western North Carolina on I-40. Due to a rockslide that occurred at mile marker 2.6 in North Carolina, near the Tennessee state line, on Oct. 25, Interstate 40 is closed from mile marker 451 in Tennessee to mile marker 20 in North Carolina. For an alternate route, NC DOT recommends using I-81 to I-26.
